Arctic Indigenous Languages Symposium

The Arctic Indigenous Languages Symposium in Tromsø focus on the trends and future for small Arctic languages. The symposium is the first Arctic Council project where indigenous peoples are in the lead.

Monday morning the Arctic Council states were sitting on the back row when the Arctic Indigenous Languages Symposium started in Tromsø, Norway. In front were representatives for the six organizations which represent the indigenous people in the Arctic Council.

The symposium which is the first of its kind focus on the Arctic languages role now and in the future. It is a project under the Arctic Council working group for Sustainable Development, lead by Canada and the Inuit Circumpolar Conference.

Duane Smith, president of ICC Canada opened the symposium. "This is the first Arctic Council project ever which is lead by indigenous people", he proudly noticed.

Also the participants were welcomed by SDWG chair, Stein Rosenberg, who noticed that the language meeting just was the beginning on a week characterized by four different meetings meetings this week.under the SDWG auspices in Tromsø.
