From Oral Tradition to Rap

IPY-project focuses on story-telling and fiction among indigenous peoples in the Arctic

The Nordic Council of Ministers has supported an IPY-project about fiction and story-telling in the Arctic with DKK 125.000. The project will focus on story-telling among Inuits, Samis and people from the Faroe Island and will be lead by associate professor Karen Langgaard from the Greenlandic University Ilisimatusarfik.

"We want to know more and to spread the knowledge about existing studies," Karen Langgaard says to Arctic News.

The project will end up with a book with articles and assessments about the oral tradition and fiction in the Circumpolar area. The support from Nordic Council of Ministers contributes to a broader cooperation between scientists in the Nordic Countries, Alaska and Canada.

The project is named "From Oral Tradition to Rap" and is a part of a bigger project also lead by the Greenlandic University. This project includes studies in language policy and planning, computer-assisted linguistics and media policy.
