Climate Changes Create New Island

Greenland becomes larger as the climate gets warmer

At the same time top politicians from five countries are discussing the future of the North Pole in the light of the climate changes the effects of a warmer climate can be seen just outside the window.

Climate changes have created a new island near Sermeq Avannarleq glacier near Ilulissat, reports the Greenlandic paper Sermitsiaq.

The paper sees the new island as a symbol which shows that Greenland has become larger due to global warming.

Qarsunga appeared after the Sermeq Avannarleq glacier near the Ilulissat Fjord retreated.

The area is used for dogsledding and dogsledders from this years Greenlandic championship in dogsledding tell that ten years ago, when the championship was held for the first time the island did not exist. In the course of ten years, a medium-large island has appeared from the ice glacier which is melting.

Sermeq Avannarleq is a dying ice glacier. It is not producing ice, only melting.

The name Qarsunga means "the pale island" and was suggested by 12-year-old Olaava Jensen in a name contest connected to the Greenlandic championship in dogsledding.
