SAO Meeting started

More than 200 participants in a Arctic Council Meeting in Copenhagen

Thursday morning the first SAO Meeting in the Arctic Council under the Danish Chairmanship started in Copenhagen.

The SAO Chair, Ambassador Lars Møller welcomed the more than 200 participants to the Danish capital and noticed an increased activity in the Council:

"There is growing level of activity in the Arctic Council, and we bring with us an ambitious agenda from the Tromsø ministerial meeting - not least in the form of the Tromsø declaration.

We have tried to accommodate everybody to the extent possible during the preparations of the meeting and I'm quite sure that everybody would have been much more - if not 100% - satisfied if only we had 4 days and not as it is - only 2 days."

On the agenda are topics as search and rescue, the upcoming COP 15 meeting and the melting Greenlandic ice sheet. The SAO's are also requested to take decisions about the Arctic Human Health Groups activities and the Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program.

The meeting will continue Friday.
