Ministers to Discuss the Melting Ice

Støre and Gore Call For High-level Meeting On Melting Ice

The Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre and US Vice President Al Gore (former) will shortly invite to a ministerial conference on melting ice, - 'Melting Ice - Regional Dramas, Global Wake-Up Call'.

The conference will be held in Tromsø, Norway, 28 April this year. It will be at a ministerial level (minister of Foreign Affairs), and will be chaired by the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice-President Al Gore.

The intention of the conference is to highlight melting ice as an important consequence of global climate change. The ice is melting not only in the polar regions, but also in most other ice covered areas of the world. Changes in the volumes and extents of ice and snow have both global and local impacts on climate, ecosystems and human well-being, affecting people's homes and livelihoods worldwide.

The conference will be held back to back with Arctic Council Ministerial meeting that will take place in Tromsø 29 April. The expected outcome will be a message from ice covered parts of the world to the UNFCCC COP-15 meeting in Copenhagen in December this year.
