The Ministerial Meeting in Tromsø

Now the Press can register for the Ministerial Meeting

In the last week of April - on April the 29th - the Arctic Council is going to hold its biennial ministerial meeting. The participants of the meeting are the ministers of foreign affairs from the eight member countries and leading representatives from six indigenous peoples organizations. This year the meeting will be held in Tromsø - one of the northernmost cities in Norway and residence to the Arctic Council Secretariat.

The Ministerial Meeting marks the end of the Norwegian Chairmanship. Denmark is going to take over the chairmanship for the next two years. Last Ministerial Meeting was held in Salekhard, Russia in the autumn 2006.

The purpose of the Tromsø Meeting is to endorse a ministerial declaration which will guidance the work in the Arctic Council for the next two years.

The organizers of this years meeting expect more than 300 participants representing the member states, the Permanent Participants and observer states and organisations. The venue will be the Rica Ishavshotel in the harbour of Tromsø. For many of the participants this hotel is wellknown since Arctic Council had its first SAO Meeting under the Norwegian Chairmanship here.

The Ministerial Meeting will be held back to back with the former U.S. vicepresident Al Gores and the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jonas Gahr Støres conference: Melting Ice; Regional Dramas, Global Wake-Up Call.
