The Arctic Council visits Ilulissat
The number of tourists in Ilulissat has doublet up since the Icefjord granted status as World Heritage
Ilulissat is world known as it is the place of the Ilulissat Icefjord since the fjord granted status as World Heritage on Unesco's list. The Icefjord has become a symbol of the challenges the Arctic faces due to climate change.
People in Ilulissat are proud of the status says Mayor Jess Svane.
"During the last five years we have experienced an increased interest from tourists and the number of tourists has doublet up.
The increased number of international meetings and conferences do often have a visit to the fjord as a part of the arrangement and is followed intensely by the press. In addition to this scientists from all over the world follow the impacts of climate change in the fjord.
This has increased the number of jobs in the municipality and I do hope that it will help to stabilize the small scale economy in Greenland.
The municipality is aware of its responsibility to secure this unique part of the World Heritage."
Ilulissat has 4000 inhabitants and is the central city in the world's largest municipality - the District of Northwest Greenland.
