Vulcanic Impacts on Arctic Environment

The Arctic Council Working Group AMAP suggests a study on the impacts of the Icelandic on the Arctic and Global Environment

A group of scientists related to the Arctic Council Working Group suggests that the Working Group starts a study of the impacts of the current volcanic eruption in Iceland. They believe that the eruption can have huge economic and social impacts.

In a working paper the scientists write that "while massive explosive eruptions are not frequent, they are a reality and will recur. We must be fully aware of the immediate threats and the potential impacts of this type of volcanic eruption. The unpredictability of volcanoes occurance as well as their influence on the environment points out a need for a systematic contingency system that can rapidly identify the particular risks of each new eruption.  Volcanoes are occur globally but several important issues are specifically Arctic in nature. It is a worthy subject of study within the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme Working Group."
