Inuit Leaders Meet in Nuuk, Greenland

Greenland hosts the World's Inuit Leaders in Nuuk, June 28 – July 2, 2010. The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), one of the 6 Permanent Participants in the Arctic Council, holds its General Assembly in Nuuk, Greenland, from June 28 to July 2.

ICC is the International Organization that represent all the world's Inuit from Greenland, USA, Canada and Russia.

ICC’s objectives are:
• To strengthen the unity between Inuit in the circumpolar regions.
• To work for Inuit rights and interests at the international level.
• To preserve and develop Inuit culture and society, both for the present and future generations.
• To seek full and active participation in the political, economic and social development in our countries.
• To develop and encourage long-term solutions for the protection of the Arctic environment.
• To work for the international recognition of all aboriginal peoples.

Every fourth year, Inuit leaders from Greenland, USA, Canada and Russia come together to decide future plans for common concerns and development in the Arctic. It is the largest meeting of the World's Inuit leaders. This year they celebrate 30 years of cooperation. This is the first time in this century that the ICC General Assembly takes place in Greenland.

The Arctic is quickly changing due to climate change and many new developments need to be discussed, including the pressing problems of economic and resource development, while preserving the cultures and the identities of Arctic Peoples.

Topics to be addressed by the leaders include:
• Environment, including Climate Change
• Political and economic development
• Health and Well-being
• Hunting and Food Security
• Governance
• Inuit Arctic Policy
