    A new report from Working Group PAME provides guidance on options to promote improved safety culture and robust safety management systems in the Arctic offshore oil and gas industry. As interest in Arctic offshore petroleum resources continues to grow, there has been growing concern about the potential effects that an increase in such activities could have on the Arctic marine environment and the ways of life of indigenous people and local communities.

    In March 2014, Gustaf Lind, Senior Arctic Official for Sweden, spoke in London at a Conference on Sustainable Arctic Shipping and Marine Operations organized and supported by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, the Embassy of Sweden in London and the Nordic Council of Ministers. In a brief interview, Mr. Lind spoke about Sweden's specific experience, knowledge and skills in this area.

    In March 2014, Patrick Borbey, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials, spoke in London at a Conference on Sustainable Arctic Shipping and Marine Operations.  In a brief interview, Mr. Borbey spoke about the collaborative work of the Arctic states and associated issues of marine safety, infrastructure and tourism, including the work of PAME’s Arctic Marine Tourism project.

    Secretary General of IMO attends Arctic Council meeting

    Mr. Koji Sekimizu, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), attended the most recent meeting of Senior Arctic Officials in Yellowknife, Canada. He gave a presentation on the IMO’s work towards completion of a mandatory Polar Code and welcomed strengthened collaboration with the Arctic Council in the future.

    Three PAME workshops on the Arctic marine environment

    During the week of 10-14 June, 2013, the Arctic Council’s Working Group on Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME) convened three workshops in Reykjavík, Iceland to advance work as directed by the Arctic Council Ministers in Kiruna and outlined in PAME‘s 2013-2015 workplan.
