The Secretariat 

The Arctic Council Secretariat supports the Chair of the Arctic Council.  In the past, the location of this Secretariat has rotated with the Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.  Chairmanship of the Arctic Council rotates among the Arctic Council Member States on a biennial basis.  Norway will hold the chairmanship from 2006-spring 2009;  Denmark will hold the chairmanship from 2009-2011; and Sweden from 2011-2013.  These three countries have made a joint agreement for the duration of their respective chairmanships to have one shared Secretariat, located in Tromsø.  The Norwegian Polar Institute is hosting the Arctic Council Secretariat, located at Polarmiljøsenteret, the Polar Environmental Center, which houses many Arctic institutions and companies, focusing on environmental research and cooperation in the Arctic.
