Biodiversity Indicators: Migratory Bird Index

28 September 2015

The Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF)’s Circumpolar Biodiversity Monitoring Program (CBMP) is developing a suite of indicators to provide a better understanding of how Arctic biodiversity is changing—from species to habitats to ecosystem processes, functions and services. A quick update on one such indicator is provided below.

Migratory Birds Index (part of the Arctic Species Trend Index)

In partnership with UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre, the Zoological Society of London and WWF, CAFF’s CBMP is developing a report on the status and trends of 129 species of Arctic-breeding migratory birds.

“This report will help scientists describe the broad trends in Arctic-breeding bird populations, which is necessary for designing informed and targeted conservation strategies along their migratory routes to address reported declines in species,” said Reidar Hindrum, CAFF’s Norwegian Chair.

The report is scheduled for delivery to Senior Arctic Officials after CAFF meets in Tromsø and will inform the work of CAFF’s Arctic Migratory Birds Initiative (AMBI).
