From the Signing of the Founding Declaration to the Current Chairship: Greenland Reflects on 30 Years of Cooperation in the Arctic Council

Thirty years ago, on September 19 1996, Greenland’s then Premier, Lars-Emil Johansen, signed the declaration establishing the Arctic Council on behalf of the Kingdom of Denmark. Today, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Business and Mineral Resources, Múte B. Egede, serves as Chair of the Arctic Council on behalf of the Kingdom. Múte Bourup Egede met with the original signatory to reflect on the 30 years of dedicated cooperation within the Council.

A central point of the story is that both the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland have played a role in the governance of the Arctic for many years. This underscores the continued relevance of preserving cooperation within the Arctic Council at a time when there is growing global attention on the region.
