Save the date: Third International Conference on Ecosystem Approach to Management in the Arctic Large Marine Ecosystems

The third International Conference on Ecosystem Approach to Management (EA) will take place in Tromsø, Norway, on 16-18 April 2024.

The conference is part of the official program of the Norwegian Chairship of the Arctic Council (2023-2025) and is co-organized by four Arctic Council Working Groups, the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment (PAME), the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP), the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) and the Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG), as well as the experts from Arctic Council States, Permanent Participants and two Observer organizations, International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and WWF Arctic. The conference seeks to explore pathways towards a future with a holistic perspective in managing the region’s fast changing marine ecosystem.

What is Ecosystem Approach to Management (EA)

In an Arctic Council context, EA is defined as the “comprehensive, integrated management of human activities based on best available scientific and traditional knowledge about the ecosystem and its dynamics, in order to identify and take action on influences that are critical to the health of ecosystems, thereby achieving sustainable use of ecosystem goods and services and maintenance of ecosystem integrity" (Kiruna Declaration, 2013).

While the EA concept is an established practice, the fundamental changes Arctic marine ecosystems are undergoing raise questions as to how the concept will be pursued in future as environmental conditions become increasingly uncertain and marine transportation and industries continue to expand. The third EA International Conference 2024 conference seeks to address these questions, to exchange lessons learned and best practices for the implementation of EA in the Arctic, and to examine how these practices reflect the knowledge, the goals, the advice, and the voices of the peoples living in the Arctic.
