Mathieu Parker steps down as Director of the Arctic Council Secretariat to pursue new role in Canadian Arctic

On Friday, 19 June 2026, Mathieu Parker announced that he will be stepping down from his role as Director of the Arctic Council Secretariat, a position he has held since 2021, to take on a new role as Deputy Head and President of the Nunavut Housing Corporation in Canada.

Although the news release states that the appointment is effective immediately, Mathieu is not scheduled to take up his new functions until 21 September 2026, in order to ensure a smooth transition.

“While I am very excited to take on this important challenge and critical portfolio for the wellbeing and prosperity of Nunavummiut, I will be extremely sad to leave the Arctic Council and the awesome team that we have built here at the ACS and IPS over these last 5 years,  as well as the many colleagues and friends made across the broader Arctic Council family along the way; a family which has been through so much together over the course of my tenure in this role,” said Mathieu Parker.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mathieu for his significant contributions and strong commitment to the Arctic Council over these years. The work of the Arctic Council Secretariat has been vital in navigating a challenging time for the Council. Through Mathieu’s professional expertise and sound advice, he has made a substantial contribution in this regard. We wish him every success in the important work he is about to undertake in Nunavut" said Kenneth Høegh, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials.

According to Høegh, the recruitment process for the position will begin shortly.

“The Arctic Council Secretariat plays a crucial role in ensuring that the Council operates effectively. I look forward to working with all Arctic States and Permanent Participants to launch the recruitment process and ensure that we identify the right person to take over the position,” he said.
