Underwater noise in the Arctic

Providing a baseline understanding of underwater noise in Arctic regions, including ambient sound levels, underwater noise created by anthropogenic activities, and impacts of underwater noise on marine life

Build on the research findings from both the 2019 Underwater Noise in the Arctic: State of Knowledge Report and 2021 ‘Underwater Noise Pollution from Shipping in the Arctic Report to further develop decision-support tools for minimizing impacts from vessel underwater noise in the Arctic.

  1. Improve understanding of underwater noise generated by shipping in the Arctic
  2. Develop operational and technological scenarios
  3. Share findings of this project to relevant Arctic Council and other multilateral fora
